Bugaboo Bee strollers recalled due to risk of brake failure

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall on Wednesday of Bugaboo Bee Strollers because of the risk of brake failure.

The commission said one or both sides of the brakes can fail, causing the stroller to roll away on an incline unexpectedly. The resulting motion could injure a child inside the stroller.

Bugaboo Bee strollers have item code 580210 printed on a label on the back of the seat and item code 50100 on a label on the plastic support under the seat. The strollers were sold in blue, dark khaki, pink, red, yellow and black. "bugaboo(r) bee" is printed on the left side of the seat.

About 22,500 of the units, distributed by Bugaboo North America Inc. of Hermosa Beach, Calif., and manufactured in Taiwan, were sold through retail outlets in the U.S. and on various websites from August 2007 through April 2009. Each stroller cost about $530 US.

Bugaboo has received 121 reports of the brakes on the strollers failing. No injuries have been reported.

Consumers are being told to stop using the strollers immediately and contact Bugaboo to receive a free repair kit.
