SportsPlay recalls playground sets due to lead paint

SportsPlay Equipment Inc. is voluntarily recalling playground equipment sold in the United States because the handrails and posts contain high levels of lead paint that can be toxic if ingested by children, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

The recall affects about 540 playground equipment units that were distributed by SportsPlay Equipment of St. Louis, Mo., and made by Floteks of Turkey, the agency said.

There have been no reports of incidents or injuries, the agency said.

The recall involves the Tot Town Fun Center, Tot Town Castle Fun Center, Tea Cup Merry Go Round, 8' Web Climber, Rope Wall, Four Panel Circular Aztec Climber and Three Panel Aztec Climber.

SportsPlay dealers across the United States sold the equipment from January 2003 through December 2007 for between $1,300 and $5,500 US.

People should stop using the playground immediately if the painted parts have chipped off, the agency said.
Consumers with the recalled playground sets have been directly contacted regarding the recall and will receive free replacement parts, the agency said.
