GE ranges can catch fire

GE Consumer & Industrial of Louisville, Ky., has recalled about 28,000 Profile Freestanding Duel Fuel ranges because the wiring can overheat, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

The company is aware of 33 reports of wiring that caught fire, including one fire that caused structural damage to a home and 14 reports of minor property damage. There have been 47 reports of overheated wiring. No injuries have been reported.

The recalled 30-inch ranges were sold in white, black, bisque and stainless steel. They have either the model number J2B900 with serial numbers beginning with LD, MD, RD, SD, TD, VD, ZD, AF, DF, FF, GF, HF, LF, MF, or model number J2B915 and serial numbers beginning with MF, RF, SF, TF, VF, ZF, AG, DG, FG, GG, HG, LG, MG, RG, SG, TG, VG, ZG on the left inside corner of the bottom drawer.

They were sold at department and appliance stores from June 2002 through December 2005 for between $1,300 US and $2,000 US.

Consumers should stop using the oven and contact GE at (888) 352-9764 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, and between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday for a free repair. Consumers can continue to use the burners.
