Bikes recalled over faulty handlebars

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling 2009 bicycles sold under the brand name Specialized, because the handlebars can break, posing a fall hazard.

Specialized Bicycle Components Inc., of Morgan Hill, Calif. has received two reports of the handlebar breaking during use, one of which caused a rider to suffer head trauma, which resulted in unconsciousness and a puncture wound to the arm.

About 14,000 of the bicycles were sold at dealers across the United States from June 2008 through February 2009 for between $640 and $1,050 US.

Consumers should immediately stop riding these bicycles and contact a Specialized dealer for a free replacement handlebar.
