Off-road bike parts pose crash hazard

Wiseco Performance Products of Mentor, Ohio, has recalled about 420 off-road dirt bike connecting rods or crankshaft assemblies because they could crack and cause the engine to lock up, causing a crash, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says.

No injuries have been reported.

This recall covers parts with Wiseco’s identification number on the neck between the two circular ends. The part number and date code can be found on the product’s packaging. The parts are:
Identification number (on engine part) WR10082, part number (on packaging) WPC139, part type YZ450F crank assembly.
· Identification number WR10081, part number WPC140, part type YZ250F crank assembly.
· Identification number WR10081, part number WPC141, part type WR250F crank assembly.
· Identification number WR10086, part number WPC144, part type KX250F/RMZ250 crank assembly.
· Identification number WR10082, part number WPC145, part typeWR450F crank assembly.
· Identification number WR10081, part number WPR196, part type YZ/WR250F connecting rod.
· Identification number WR10082, part number WPR197, part type YZ/WR450F connecting rod.

The parts were sold at U.S. off-road dirt bike distributors and directly through the Wiseco website from March 2007 through December 2008 for about $130 US for the connecting rods, and between $240 and $300 for the crankshaft assemblies.

Wiseco is offering free replacement parts and repairs, or a full refund if the consumer has already replaced the recalled parts.

The company can be reached at (800) 321-1364 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Thursday, and between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET on Friday.
