Health Canada said Maytag Corp. has issued a recall of a variety of its side-by-side and top-freezer refrigerators manufactured between January 2001 and January 2004.
The order covered approximately 193,500 fridges sold at department and appliance stores and by homebuilders across Canada.
The recall covers refrigerators with the following brand names:
· Maytag
· Jenn-Air
· Amana
· Admiral
· Magic Chef
· Performa
· Crosley
The company has received 41 reports of an electrical failure in a relay, which turns on the appliance’s compressor, which in turn can overheat and cause a fire.
Health Canada said there have been two reports of such incidents in Canada but no associated injuries.
Maytag’s American parent has issued a recall covering 1.6 million refrigerators sold in the United States.
Maytag is telling owners to call the company at 866-533-9817 to ascertain whether a fridge is affected by the order and, if so, to schedule an in-house repair visit.
