Health Canada is recalling the Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gate manufactured before 2008, because the hinges that mount the gate to the wall can break and pose a potential fall hazard to children.
The product is a white metal gate with a grey handle and a motion-sensing night light. Its model number is 42111 and the UPC number is 0 52181 42111 2.
The model number is located on a sticker on the underside of the handle panel. The manufacture date can be found on the panel of the gate below the handle. There is a date wheel imprinted in the plastic and on a sticker inside the battery door.
Gates manufactured in 2008 are not affected by the recall.
Dorel Distribution Canada, of Ville St. Laurent, Que., has received several reports of incidents related to the use of this product but none with injuries.
Health Canada has received two reports of incidents of faulty hinges related to the use of these gates, with one resulting in a minor injury.
About 58,000 gates were sold from December 2004 to January 2009 at various retail stores across Canada.
