Disposable hotel makeup towelettes recalled over bacteria contamination

Health Canada is recalling disposable hotel towelettes for removing makeup because they are contaminated with the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The bacteria can cause infections in the eyes, respiratory system, soft tissues and throughout the body, especially in people with weak immune systems.

The towelettes, provided as a guest amenity in Holiday Inn Express hotels, are marketed under the name Simply Smart "Remove" Make up Removing Towelettes and are packaged as single towelettes in a foil packet.

Approximately 25,000 of the towelettes were distributed across Canada. They were not sold in retail stores, but distributed to Holiday Inn Express hotels from May to November. They were removed as of December 2008.

Consumers and any hotel guests who may have taken a towelette are instructed to immediately stop using it and throw it away. Consumers who have used the product and have any concerns should contact a healthcare professional.
