Warning issued for brand of banana peppers

People with allergies to sulphites should not consume a brand of banana pepper, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency warned on Friday.

Cedar Phoenicia brand Greek Golden Peppers sold in 1.5-litre jars bearing the UPC 0 62356 54160 6 contain sulphites that are not declared on the label, the CFIA said in a statement.

The peppers, a variety also known as pepperoncini, are a product of Greece and are distributed nationally.

People sensitive to sulphites who consume the peppers may be running the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction, the CFIA said.

There have been no illnesses associated with consuming the peppers, the CFIA said, and the federal agency is working with the importer to remove the product from store shelves.

The CFIA said consumers looking for more information can call the agency at 1-800-442-2342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET, Monday to Friday.
