Magnets in children's science kits recalled over lead paint

- By Peter Hadzipetros
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling Alnico bar magnets packaged as part of a children's science kit because the surface paints on the magnets contain excessive levels of lead.
The recall involves Alnico 7.5-cm long bar magnets. The magnets are painted red and blue, and were originally packaged as a pair or as a component of a science kit. The magnets were sold as item No. MG-BAR3AL.
About 400 magnets were sold by web retailers and by mail order between May 2008 and September 2008.
Consumers should take the magnets away from children and contact the manufacturer, Home Science Tools, of Billings, Mont., to receive replacement magnets.
