Ski-Doo snowmobiles recalled over safety hazard

About 18,000 Ski-Doo snowmobiles were recalled Friday because cracks may develop in the joints of the drive axle assembly, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Friday.

The CPSC warned the cracks may cause the vehicle to lock unexpectedly, resulting in riders being thrown from the vehicle.

The company has learned of 20 related incidents, including one broken femur and minor injuries.

The recall affects certain 2008 and 2009 models made in Canada and sold in the U.S. from June 2007 through September 2008 for between $7,000 and $12,500 US.

Consumers should stop using the snowmobiles and return them to their dealer for a free repair.
