Water dispensers may overheat

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled about 44,000 Greenway, Polar and Vitapur countertop water dispensers because an internal element can overheat and could give an electric shock.

Greenway Home Products of Northwood, Ohio, has received one report of a fire involving the dispenser that caused property damage. The fire was outside the U.S., but the commission didn't say where. No injuries have been reported.

The dispensers provide hot or cold water from three or five gallon bottles. The model name is printed on the front of the base, while model and serial numbers are on a white label on the back of the base. The file number 218326 is printed on a silver sticker on the back of the base.

The recalled models include the Vitapur VWD2636W, VWD2636BLK and VWD2636RED, the Greenway GWD2630W and Polar PWD2635Ws, all with serial numbers between 0606 and 0711.

The devices were sold from June 2006 to November 2007 for between $70 US and $80.

Consumers should contact Greenway at (866) 279-0088 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET Monday through Friday for a free repair.
