Health Canada recalls Pop Up Toy by Galt

It said some forms of barium are safely used in medical and commercial settings, while other forms of barium can be toxic, causing adverse health effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and cramps.

Children's toys coated with paint containing barium in excess of the allowable limit are strictly prohibited in Canada. No injuries as a result of use of the toy have been reported.

The toy, made in China, is a wooden block with four pegs in red, blue, yellow and green. Spring action forces the pegs up. The packaging indicates that the toy is suitable for children 12 months or older. The product reference is AO138L; UPC 5011979101389.

The toy has been sold in Canada since about 1979 at various toy and educational stores across the country.
Consumers should immediately take the toy away from children. Health Canada advises consumers who purchased the toy before December 2006 to dispose of the toy.

Consumers who purchased their toy between January 2007 and August 2008 may return the toy where purchased for a full refund.
