Electra Bicycle recalls Amsterdam bikes

Electra Bicycle Co. is voluntarily recalling Amsterdam bikes because their chain can derail and cause injury to riders, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday.

The interior alignment tabs of the bike's chain guard can be pushed against the chain causing it to derail, the commission said.

Electra of Vista, Calif., said it has received four reports of this problem including one report of a person who sustained minor cuts and abrasion from a fall, the CPSC said.

This recall affects 1,500 bikes. About 9,500 other bikes were recalled on July 22.

This recall involves some Amsterdam model bicycles in the Classic 3, Original 3, Royal 8, and Sport 3 styles. The bicycles have an enclosed chain guard. Electra and Amsterdam are printed on the bicycle’s frame and/or chain guard.

Bicycles with frame numbers beginning with EL or bicycles with chain guards marked 06/08 are not included in this recall. The frame number is located on the underside of the bottom bracket.

The affected bikes were sold by authorized dealers in the United States from January 2007 to June 2008 for between $400 US and $850 US.

Consumers should immediately stop riding these bicycles and contact Electra Bicycle to determine if they are affected by this recall.

Consumers can bring their bikes to an Electra Bicycle dealer for a free inspection and replacement chain guard part.
