Holiday mugs pulled for high cadmium levels

About 24,000 holiday mugs sold at Everything for a Dollar stores across Canada are being recalled because they pose a health risk, Health Canada said Monday.
The recall affects Valentine mugs (product numbers GCM131/2-VAL(A), GCM131VAL-A, GCM131VAL-B), Merry Christmas mugs (XCM131/2A, XCM131/2B), mugs with teddy bears (XCM119) and happy birthday mugs (GCM77HB) sold since October 2007.
Health Canada warns glaze used on the mugs release cadmium, which is toxic and can cause stomach pains, vomiting, diarrhea and kidney damage.
No associated adverse health effects have been reported to Health Canada.
Consumers should stop using the mugs, the federal agency said.
The products, which were made in China, were imported by Estowest Company Limited of Richmond Hill, Ont.
