Sex enhancement products contain potentially dangerous additive

Health Canada is following a U.S. regulator's lead and advising consumers not to use the Aspire 36 and Aspire Lite sex enhancement products.

The capsules contain undeclared compounds that resemble sildenafil, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has warned.

Sildenafil is a prescription drug used to treat of erectile dysfunction.

Unsupervised use of the drug by patients with heart disease could cause effects ranging from heart attacks, strokes, hypertension, chest pains and abnormal heartbeats to sudden cardiac death.

Sildenafil should not be used by individuals taking any type of nitrate drug because they could develop potentially life-threatening low blood pressure.
