Children's sunglasses pulled for unsafe levels of lead paint

About 144,000 children's sunglasses are being recalled because surface paint on the products contains high levels of lead, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.

The glasses, which were imported by Florida-based StyleMark Inc., were sold in dark blue and dark red colours and stamped with the words "Main Street Drag." The glasses were also stamped with the style number DI25K7116. Consumers may have purchased the glasses in U.S. stores from October 2007 through March 2008 for between $6 and $9 US.

The glasses were manufactured in China.

High amounts of lead can harm the nervous system, kidneys and other major organs. Anemia, a decline in red blood cells, can occur, as can damage to the nervous system that may impair mental function. At worst, lead poisoning can cause seizures or death.

No adverse health effects have been reported.

Consumers should take the glasses away from children and contact the company for a replacement.
