Avoid Xian Zhi Wei II, Health Canada says
- April 29, 2008 2:24 PM
- By Peter Hadzipetros
Health Canada is warning consumers not to use Xian Zhi Wei II, a Japanese slimming product sold in capsules.
Health Canada is following a warning from the Hong Kong Department of Health, which found that the product contains sibutramine and phenolphthalein.
Sibutramine is a prescription drug used to treat obesity. Phenolphthalein was previously used in over-the-counter laxatives, but is now prohibited in Canada because it may cause cancer.
Sibutramine may cause headaches, increased heart rate and blood pressure, chest pain, and stroke.
Individuals who may have been exposed to phenolphthalein should consult a health practitioner.
