Toasters could be fire hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled about 12,000 toasters that can turn on even if nothing is being toasted, possibly igniting anything on top of the appliance.

No injuries have been reported.

The recall covers chrome two-slice electric toasters sold as: Farberware (model No. FCT200 or FCT100), Hoffritz (model No. HZT2 and HZT2M) and Russell Hobbs (model No. RH2MT). The brand name and model number are on a plate on the bottom of the toaster.

Salton Inc., of Lake Forest, Ill., distributed the toasters, sold online and by U.S. retail liquidators from January 2000 to December 2007 for between $40 and $50 US.

About 13,000 similar toasters were recalled by QVC in December 2007.

Consumers should cut off the power cord and return it for a full refund.
