Pepper powder recalled in Alberta, B.C.

Canada's food watchdog is warning consumers that National Black Pepper Powder, sold in Alberta and British Columbia, may be tainted with salmonella.

The recall, issued by B.C.-based Pak National Foods Limited, affects 50 g packages with the UPC code 6 20514 00077 0 and a best before date of May 2010. The powder was imported from Pakistan.

The CFIA warns that food tainted with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but the bacteria can cause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Young children, the elderly and people with weak immune systems may be particularly vulnerable to serious or deadly infections.

No associated illnesses have been reported.

Consumers with questions can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342.
