Health Canada says about 40,000 Hamilton Beach and Proctor Silex brand toasters have been recalled because they pose a fire hazard.
The models can remain on after the toast pops and so could ignite flammable items close to or on the appliance.
The affected models are black, red, white, chrome or brushed chrome with either two or four-slice capacity.
They were sold from August 2007 through February 2008.
Either Hamilton Beach or Proctor Silex is printed on the side of the toasters.
The model numbers, found on the bottom of the toasters, are 22145B, 22779, 22145BC, 22900, 22450, 22903, 22559, 22559H, 22625, 24450, 22627C, 24559, 22635, 24657, 22657, 24779 and 22658.
Hamilton Beach Brands Inc. distributes both brands. People may contact Hamilton Beach by calling (800) 574-6800 to receive a free replacement toaster.
