Deep fryers could catch fire

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled Cooks deep fryers imported by JCPenney, because they could overheat and catch fire.

The agency said it is aware of five incidents involving the fryers, one that led to a minor burn and three of damage to countertops.

About 27,000 of the fryers were sold at JCPenney stores, by mail and through its website from August 2007 to January 2008 for about $50 US each.

The fryer has a brushed stainless steel exterior, a wire mesh basket with a handle, a lid with a window, and black handles. “Cooks” is stamped on the side and the model number 22016 is printed on the bottom.
JCPenney is offering a refund.
