Cantaloupe recall widened

Canada's food watchdog is updating an earlier recall of cantaloupes, saying the product was more widely distributed than first thought.

Consumers across Canada who have purchased cantaloupe should check with their grocer to determine where the fruit was imported from, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Wednesday.

Some whole cantaloupes and cut-fruit products from the Honduras-based grower Agropecuaria Montelibano are believed to be linked with a salmonella outbreak in the U.S. and Canada.

Last week, the CFIA issued an advisory, warning consumers that Agropecuaria Montelibano cantaloupes were distributed by Safeway stores in B.C., as well as through Federated Co-Op in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, northwestern Ontario, Nunavut, Northwest Territories and the Yukon.

The CFIA warns that food tainted with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but the bacteria can cause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Young children, the elderly and people with weak immune systems may be particularly vulnerable to serious or deadly infections.
