Canadian firm's chicken recalled in U.S.

Frozen chicken entrees produced by Inovata Foods Corp. of Edmonton have been recalled in the U.S. because the product may have been contaminated with a potentially dangerous bacteria, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.

About 1,720 kilograms of Discover Cuisine Red Curry Chicken & Jasmine Rice were produced in October, exported to the U.S., and then distributed across that country, the department's Food Safety and Inspection Service said.

The entrees were in four-packs of 12 ounces each with the Canadian establishment number "Est. 302" inside the Canadian Food Inspection Agency inspection mark. The packages have a "Best By" date of "12 18 08." The item number 2880 appears by the UPC code on the package.

There have been no reports of illnesses.

The bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes, can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, including infants, the elderly and persons with HIV or undergoing chemotherapy.
