New York-based eeBoo Corp is recalling about 80,000 sketchbooks because paint on the metal binding contains levels of lead that exceed safety standards, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.
The recall applies to the following book styles sold in the U.S.:
- Drawing birds.
- Butterflies.
- Garden party.
- Up in the tree.
- Nemo with princess in balloon.
- Princess with butterflies.
The books are all sized 8.5" x 11.5". The Princess with butterflies was also sold in a 10" x 14" size.
The sketchbooks, which were manufactured in China, were sold from September 2005 through January 2008 for about $6 US.
High amounts of lead can harm the nervous system, kidneys and other major organs. Anemia, a decline in red blood cells, can occur, as can damage to the nervous system that may impair mental function. At worst, lead poisoning can cause seizures or death.
No adverse health effects have been reported.
Caregivers should take the books away from children and contact the company for a replacement.
