Ride-on toy cars recalled due to fire hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Massachusetts's Dumar International USA have recalled about 64,000 Cinderella ride-on vehicles due to fire risk.

The wires under the hood and/or in the under-seat battery compartment of the Cinderella 12-volt Electric Ride-On Vehicles can short-circuit, posing a fire and burn hazard to children riding in the car.

The CPSC has received 40 reports of the toy car's wires overheating, with several cases of smoke seen coming out from the seat area where the battery is located. In one report, flames shot out from under the hood while a four-year-old girl was riding the vehicle. No injuries have been reported.

The recalled vehicles are light blue with Cinderella graphics on the front and sides. The wheels, steering wheel and seats are pink and the dashboard is white with an optional radio. "Pontiac Solstice" is printed on the back of the car and "Walt Disney's Cinderella Special Edition" is printed on the licence plate.

The cars were made in China and sold for about $200 US at Wal-Mart stores in the U.S. from August 2005 through February 2006.

The recall notice says consumers should immediately take the cars away from children and contact Dumar International at 1-866-424-0500 or via its website for a free retrofit kit, including a new battery.
