Portable heaters recalled for fire risk

Texas-based Aloha Housewares has issued a voluntary recall of about 152,000 portable electric heaters due to a fire risk.

The white "Aloha Breeze" electric oscillating tower heaters can overheat, melting plastic parts and posing a fire hazard. The company has received 29 reports of the heaters melting, smoking or catching on fire, including 18 reports of property damage. One customer reported minor burns to the hand and feet.

The heaters are manufactured in China and were sold at Wal-Mart and small retail chain stores across the United States from August 2006 through November 2007 for between $35 and $45. The heaters have model number 02044 and date codes 06/06, 06/07, 06/08 or 06/09 printed on the silver label on the back of the heater, near the bottom.

Consumers should immediately stop using the heaters and contact the company at 1-800-295-4448 for a replacement product.
