Mexx Kids shoes and sunglasses recalled for lead content

More than 1,700 pairs of Mexx Kids shoes and 1,300 pairs of sunglasses have been recalled because of their lead content.

High amounts of lead can harm the nervous system, kidneys and other major organs. Anemia, a decline in red blood cells, can occur, as can damage to the nervous system that may impair mental function. At worst, lead poisoning can cause seizures or death.

No complaints or injuries have been reported.

The products are manufactured by Liz Claiborne Inc. and sold by Mexx Canada Inc.

The recall includes 561 units of the boy's trekker shoe, model J1824F, and 442 units of the mini boy's trekker shoe with a soft sole, model J1825F, all sold between September and October 2007.

The mini girl's shoe, model C1815F, of which 752 units were sold between March and October 2007, was also recalled.

Additionally, the company recalled 1,339 pairs of sunglasses sold between March and October 2007. The model number is CC925F.

Customers are advised to discontinue use of the items and return them to any Mexx store for a full refund by May 31, 2008. Mexx will also offer a $20 gift card to customers returning the items.
