Girls' bicycle recalled over potential welding problems

Consumers are being warned about a girls' bicycle made with a frame that was welded incorrectly.

Health Canada issued the recall Friday, warning that the frame of Trek model MT220 girls' bicycles could break, leading to a serious accident. The model name is printed on the frame of the bicycle. Model year 2008 bicycles are not included in this recall.

The manufacturer, Trek Bicycle Corporation of Waterloo, Wisconsin said it has had 13 reports of welds breaking, including four minor injuries.

More than a 1,000 of the Chinese-made bicycles were sold in Canada between 2005 and 2007.

The warning urges consumers who own the bikes to take them to their local Trek dealer. If the dealer determines that the bicycle is subject to the recall, Trek will provide a replacement Trek MT220 girls' bicycle or a $100 credit applicable to the purchase of a Trek bicycle.
