About 15,000 wooden block and train sets are being recalled in the U.S. because they contain unsafe levels of lead, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.
The recall applies to 30- and 60-piece Big Wooden Learning Block sets and 70-piece Jumbo Wooden Train sets manufactured by Hong Kong-based First Learning Company Ltd.
High amounts of lead can harm the nervous system, kidneys and other major organs. Anemia, a decline in red blood cells, can occur, as can damage to the nervous system that may impair mental function. At worst, lead poisoning can cause seizures or death.
No adverse health effects have been reported.
The toys were sold in the Christmas Tree Shops chain of U.S. stores from October 2006 through November 2007 for between $4 US and $20 US.
Caregivers should take the toys away from children and return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
