Collectible mini helmets recalled for high lead levels

California-based Bell Racing Co. is recalling about 1,400 mini racing helmets because surface paint on the products contains unsafe levels of lead.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday the recall applies to the following products:

  • Terry Borcheller helmet, part number 2005740.
  • Kurt Busch helmet, part number 2001368.
  • Vitor Meira helmet, part number 2001381.

The helmets were sold through Bell Racing dealers and distributors in the U.S. from February through November 2007 for about $40 US. The helmets were manufactured in China.

High amounts of lead can harm the nervous system, kidneys and other major organs. Anemia, a decline in red blood cells, can occur, as well as damage to the nervous system that may impair mental function. At worst, lead poisoning can cause seizures or death.

No adverse health effects have been reported.

Consumers should take the helmets away from children and contact Bell Racing for a refund.
