Manufacturing defect spurs recall of American Honda lawn mowers

California-based American Honda Motor Corp. is recalling about 22,000 lawn mowers for a manufacturing defect in the fuel tank, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.

The company said the fuel tank may crack and leak gas, creating a danger of a fire or an explosion. A total of six reports of fuel leaking have been filed, though no fires or injuries have been reported.

The recall affects the HRX217KHXA and HRX217KHMA lawn mowers with serial numbers 1400001 through 1453714.

The mowers were sold through Honda Lawn and Garden dealers in the U.S. from January 2007 through September 2007 for between $800 and $900 US.

Consumers with the affected models should stop using the lawn mowers and contact the company to have their fuel tank replaced.
