Beef recall expanded to include Edmonton, Canora stores

Two more stores have been added to an earlier recall of Ranchers Beef products for E. coli contamination fears, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Tuesday.

The recall of Ranchers beef products now includes the following:


  • Frozen diced oxtail sold at Paradise Halal Meat in Edmonton between June 12 and Aug. 2, 2007.
  • Boneless blade steak PLU #161, cross rib steak PLU #112 and lean ground beef sold at Canora AG Foods in Canora in east-central Saskatchewan between June 12 and Aug. 2, 2007.

CFIA officials say the products have been removed from store shelves but are urging consumers to check their freezers for any affected goods. The CFIA says no associated illnesses have been reported. Earlier recalls were issued on Nov. 3 and Nov. 6. For a complete list of stores and products, visit the CFIA's website.

E. coli stands for Escherichia coli, bacteria commonly found in the intestines of animals and humans. Foods tainted with the bacteria may not appear to be contaminated but may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses, such as permanent kidney damage.

Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis.
