Power tool batteries withdrawn for burn danger

California-based Alltrade Tools is recalling about 1.6 million Kawasaki power tool batteries because they may overheat, melt or fracture, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Friday.

The company has learned of 30 incidents involving the affected batteries. Injuries ranged from minor acid burns to cuts, bruises and temporary hearing loss.

The recall applies to the following 19.2 and 21.6 volt batteries:


  • KW black cordless drill, model 840128, battery pack model 691034.
  • KW black 26 PC drill set, model 840135, battery pack model 691034.
  • KW black 4 PC power tool combo, model 840338, battery pack model 691034.
  • KW black 2 PC power tool combo, model 840339, battery pack model 691034.
  • KW black 26 PC drill set, model 840135A, battery pack model 691240.
  • KW black cordless drill, model 840266, battery pack model 691221.
  • KW black cordless drill, model 840267, battery pack model 691221.

The batteries were included in power tool sets sold from wholesale club retailers in the U.S. from September 2005 through September 2007 for between $40 US and $100 US.

Consumers should stop using the battery packs and contact the company for a replacement at (877) 231-9239.
