Bumbo International to update safety instructions for baby seats

South African-based Bumbo International is distributing new safety labels and instructions warning consumers of possible safety hazards associated with its Bumbo Baby Seat, Health Canada said in an advisory released Monday.

Health Canada warned that if the seat is placed on a table, countertop, chair or other raised surface, young children can lean back, fall out of the seat and crash to the floor.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has learned of 28 incidents involving young children falling out of Bumbo seats. Three skull fractures have been reported to the company.

The affected seats are marked with the following: "Manufactured by Bumbo South Africa Material: Polyurethane World Patent No. PCT: ZA/1999/00030."

The manufacturer is also pulling the seats from stores to update instructions.

More than two million seats have been sold around the world since August 2003. The seats were priced at $40 US each.
