Model rockets withdrawn for safety hazard

Colorado-based Estes-Cox Corp. is recalling about 80,000 X-15 Flying Model Rockets because parts on the toy may separate, causing it to fall suddenly, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission said Friday.

The company has received seven reports of parts separating and rockets falling unexpectedly. One person was struck in the arm and needed surgery.

The rockets were sold individually and were included in rocket starter kits at hobby stores in the U.S. from June 2005 through July 2007 for between $16 US and $36 US.

Consumers should stop using the rockets and contact the company for a replacement.
