Infant deaths prompt U.S. recall of 1M cribs

Pennsylvania-based Simplicity is recalling about one million cribs in the U.S., following two infant deaths and multiple safety incidents, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Friday.

The CPSC said the drop-side, if improperly installed, can detach from the cribs, creating a gap that can trap and suffocate an infant.

Metal locking pins meant to hold up the drop-side can also present a choking hazard.

A spokesman was not immediately able to say if the cribs were sold in Canada.

The deaths of a 9-month-old child and 6-month-old infant have been associated with the cribs, according to the CPSC.

There have also been seven reports of infant entrapments and 55 safety incidents with the cribs.

The cribs were sold in U.S. department stores and children's stores from January 1998 through May 2007 for between $100 and $300 US.

The recall applies to the following crib models, some of which were sold using the Graco logo:


  • Aspen 3 in 1.
  • Aspen 4 in 1.
  • Nursery-in-a-Box.
  • Crib n Changer Combo.
  • Chelsea and Pooh 4 in 1.
  • Aspen 3 in 1.
  • Ultra 3 in 1.
  • Ultra 4 in 1.
  • Ultra 5 in 1.
  • Whitney.
  • Trio.

    The cribs are marked with one of the following model numbers: 600, 4605, 4705, 5000, 8000, 8324, 8800, 8740, 8910, 8994, 8050, 8750, 8760, and 8996.

    The CPSC says consumers should ensure the drop-side has been installed right-side up and securely attached to the grooves in the four corners.
