Mattel recalls nearly 1 million toys over lead

Mattel Inc. recalled nearly one million toys in Canada on Tuesday amid concerns over lead paint and small magnets.

The recalled items include about 890,000 magnetic toys such as Polly Pocket dolls and Batman action figures and 32,800 Sarge die-cast cars that contain lead paint manufactured between 2002 and January 2007.

In the United States, nearly nine million toys were included in Tuesday's recall, officials from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

No injuries have been reported in connection with products included in the recall.

However, the commission said that since an earlier recall of Polly Pockets play sets in November, three children have been injured by swallowing magnets and required surgery.
If more than one magnet is swallowed, they can attach to each other and cause intestinal perforation, infection or blockage, which can be fatal.

Parents should immediately take the affected products away from their children and contact the toy company at (888) 597-6597 or visit its website to receive a voucher for a replacement item.
