Recall expanded for sesame seeds sold in Quebec and Ontario

Canada's food watchdog has issued an expanded recall with more product and distribution information involving sesame seeds possibly contaminated with salmonella.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency on Thursday added three more brands to the recall, first issued on June 28. The updated recall now includes Amira-brand seeds sold in various retail stores in Quebec in the 2.5 kg (UPC 0 69467 00452 5), 150 g (UPC 0 69467 80051 6) and 454 g (UPC 69467 90803 8) weights.

Consumers should check the CFIA's advisory notice for a complete list of product codes and store information.

No associated illnesses have been reported.

Food tainted with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but the bacteria can cause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

No associated illnesses have been reported in Canada but there have been several incidents reported in the U.S.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

Consumers with questions can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342.
