Power tool batteries recalled for laceration hazard

About one million battery packs used with power tools are being withdrawn from the marketplace because they pose a laceration hazard, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday.

Wisconsin-based Milwaukee Electric Tool Co. is recalling its 14.4 and 18 volt 2.4 Ah NiCd Milwaukee Power Plus, Chicago Pneumatic and Extractor battery packs made between July 1999 and February 2004.

The CPSC said damage to a vent on the battery cell could cause the battery to explode. The company has learned of 35 incidents of batteries exploding during use, causing 11 injuries ranging from minor cuts and bruises to hearing loss.

The packs, which power drills, saws, radios, flashlights, wrenches and windshield glass removers, were sold in U.S. stores from July 1999 through 2005.

Consumers should stop using the battery packs and contact the company for a free replacement.
