Chili recalled over botulism concerns

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to consume two kinds of chili because of possible botulism contamination.

Great Value's two products — Original Chili with Beans, and Hot Chili with Beans — were sold exclusively at Wal-Mart stores across Canada, the agency said Sunday. The products and their codes at the centre of the warning are:

Original Chili with Beans, 425-gram cans bearing UPC 6 81131 79994 2.
Great Value Hot Chili with Beans, 425-gram cans bearing UPC 6 81131 79995 9.
The agency said importer Clover Leaf Seafoods LP is administering a recall on behalf of U.S. manufacturer Castleberry's Food Company, based in Georgia.

In the U.S., four cases of botulism poisoning have been associated with certain chili products made by Castleberry's, the CFIA said. There have been no reported illnesses in Canada.

Consumers are being advised to return or discard these products.

Food contaminated with botulism may not look or smell spoiled, but can cause serious illness or death in severe cases.
