Black & Decker recalls trimmers after users lacerated

Black & Decker (U.S.) Inc. is voluntarily recalling 202,000 trimmers because their strings may lacerate users when in operation.

The company, which is co-operating with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, said Friday it is recalling 202,000 Black & Decker GH1000 Grasshog XP String Trimmer/Edgers. The tool's spool and string comes loose, posing a laceration danger to users and bystanders, the company said. The trimmer may also overheat, posing a burn hazard.

Black & Decker has received 707 incident reports, including 58 reports of injuries. Two consumers cut their legs and required medical attention, the company said. Welts and broken skin to a user's eye were among the minor injuries reported. There have also been cases of property damage, including two broken windows.

The recall affects trimmers with date codes 200546 through 200645 (representing manufacture dates of Nov. 14, 2005, to Nov. 6, 2006). Only trimmers with black spools caps are affected by the recall. Those with orange spool caps are not affected.
