Unauthorized dietary supplement could cause serious side effects

A dietary supplement, not authorized for sale in Canada, could present a health risk with existing medical conditions, Health Canada warns.

HS Joy of Love, manufactured by Jen-On Herbal Science International, contains Piperadino vardenafil, a drug that should only be taken under the supervision of a doctor.

Vardenafil, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction, could cause serious side effects for people with diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular problems and patients undergoing nitrate treatment. Consumers taking other medications, including indinavir, ritonavir, ketoconazole and itraconazole, should also avoid using HS Joy of Love.

The federal agency notes travellers may have brought the pills into the country or consumers may have purchased them online.

No adverse reactions have been reported in Canada.

Consumers using the supplement should stop using the product and are advised to consult a doctor with any related concerns.
