Sesame seed recall expanded

Canada's food watchdog is expanding an earlier recall of sesame seeds withdrawn for possible salmonella contamination to include more lot codes, package sizes and distribution information.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Tuesday that the recall of Les Aliments G. Dion sesame seeds applies to the following products:

  • GD Sesame seeds, 50-gram package, UPC 6 20383 01055 9, lot codes 02W08S, 03W13S, 03W27S, 03W29S, 04W11S, 04W16S, 04W23S, 05W07S and 05W29S.
  • Sesame seeds, 1-kilogram package, UPC 6 20383 60355 3, lot codes 02W28S, 04W13S and 05W29S.

The products were distributed in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia.

No associated illnesses have been reported.

Foods tainted with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but the bacteria can cause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. In rare cases, the bacteria can kill people who are very young or elderly or who have weakened immune systems.

Every year, 6,000 to 12,000 cases of salmonella illness are reported across Canada.
