Children's jewelry withdrawn for unsafe lead levels

Tween Brands Inc. is pulling about 103,000 jewelry products from the marketplace because they contain unsafe levels of lead, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says.

The recall applies to certain necklaces, bracelets, earrings and charms sold at Limited Too and Justice stores in the U.S., and through their website and catalogue from September 2005 through May 2007 for between $2 US and $10 US.

Children absorb lead more easily than adults and are more vulnerable to poisoning. Exposure to high levels of lead can cause vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, coma or death. Symptoms include anemia, appetite loss, abdominal pain, constipation, fatigue, sleeplessness, irritability and headaches.

No associated injuries have been reported.

Consumers should return the products to the store for a refund.
