Children's rings recalled for high levels of lead

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of about 300,000 children's rings because they contain unsafe levels of lead.

The silver-coloured rings, topped with a turquoise-coloured stone, were sold in vending machines at malls and grocery stores in Baltimore, Maryland from August 2002 through April 2007 for about a quarter, the commission said Tuesday.

The rings were imported by Cardinal Distributing Co.

Children absorb lead more easily than adults and are more vulnerable to poisoning. Exposure to high levels of lead can cause vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, coma or death. Symptoms include anemia, appetite loss, abdominal pain, constipation, fatigue, sleeplessness, irritability and headache.

No associated injuries have been reported.

Consumers should take the rings away from children and dispose of them.
