Bookspan toys pulled for choking hazard

About 16,000 Discovery Bunny Books, a cloth children's book sewed into a stuffed bunny, are being pulled because a part on the toy could cause children to choke, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.

The CPSC said a seam on the bunny's leg can come open, exposing a plastic squeaker part which could pose a choking danger to children.

The company has learned of one incident in which a four-month old infant began to choke on the plastic part before the parent removed the squeaker from the child's throat.

The toys were sold through Bookspan mail-order catalogues and through its website from February 2006 through March 2007 for between $8 and $16 US.

The company is also recalling its Baby Buddy Clip-on Books because a metal clip can come loose, presenting a choking danger for young children.

The company has learned of one clip breaking. No associated injuries were reported.

The clip-on books were also sold through Bookspan's catalogues and website for between $17 and $27 US from September 2006 through March 2007.

Consumers should take the toy away from their children and contact the company for a credit.
