Health Canada is warning consumers that MIAOZI Slimming Capsules could trigger serious health problems.
The product, manufactured by Bainian Pharmacy Group of Hong Kong, is marketed as a weight-loss product. Tests have shown the capsules contain sibutramine, a prescription medicine that suppresses the appetite but should only be taken under medical supervision.
Side effects of sibutramine include increased blood pressure, chest pain and stroke. People who have cardiovascular problems or are suffering from depression should not take the drug.
The products are not authorized for sale in Canada but may have been purchased by Canadians travelling abroad or by consumers over the internet.
Consumers can contact Health Canada for more information at (613) 957-2991, or toll free at 1-866-225-0709.
