The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled about 75,000 heat recovery ventilators produced by Venmar Ventilation Inc. of Quebec.
The ventilators should be turned off and unplugged immediately, the agency said.
The motors can overheat, and the company has received four reports of fires, including one in Michigan that caused about $1 million US in damage.
The ventilators, which exchange air between the inside and outside of a house, were made between 1991 and 2001. They were sold for between $700 and $2,500 US.
A variety of models with 13 different brand names have been recalled. Details are available through the recall notice link below.
Similar Venmar products were already recalled in Canada in December.
Venmar will provide a free safety device that will shut off the ventilator if the motor overheats.
