Children's necklaces recalled because of lead levels

About 3,600 children's mood necklaces are being pulled from the marketplace because they contain dangerously high levels of lead, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday.

Children absorb lead more easily than adults and are therefore more vulnerable to poisoning. Exposure to high levels of lead can cause vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, coma or death. Symptoms include anemia, appetite loss, abdominal pain, constipation, fatigue, sleeplessness, irritability and headache.

The recall involves the mood necklaces marked with the item number AP-R428 on its packaging.

The multicoloured pendants were sold at Accessories Palace stores in the U.S. and on its website from September 2006 through February 2007 for about $1 US.

No injuries have been reported.

Consumers should take the jewelry away from the children and return it to the store for a refund.
